Check the moisture of the feathers

We will measure the moisture content of down used in high quality comforters and down jackets.

The moisture content of the feathers remains in equilibrium.
In other words, depending on the humidity of the outside air, the moisture inside the feathers is released and absorbed.

Therefore, when buying and selling, people trade based on standard moisture content.
If the humidity is off, meaning water is being traded despite high down quality, this is a serious problem.

This means that moisture measurement is essential for down.

How is it measured?

We will measure the humidity immediately.

This time we will use a standard infrared moisture tester. “FD-720” belong to Kett Electric .

An optional sample plate with mysid “FW-B130” and a separate “feather measuring grid” are used for feathers. Use. When using a sample plate with a grid, you cannot use a handling tool, so you can use a “sample plate holder” and Another convenient way is to have an electronic scale.

First, the sample dish and feather net are placed in the moisture meter and a minus point (zero point) is taken.

Feathers are stuffed into a feather net. Feathers are very light and get scattered everywhere so they need to be packed in bags.

In this case, the weight is 1.4g, which is enough to make the mesh swell. At least 0.5g is enough, but the more you pack, the more representative the sample will be, the more you need to pack than 1.0g. Sampling is a good idea.
Also, like many other samples, if you are taking a sample while measuring the mass of the specimen while it is on the moisture meter, you should pack it before placing it on the moisture meter as it will be difficult to work with the feathers flying around.

When the weight is stable and the stability mark appears, press the “Measure” key and start measuring.

After a while, the measurement is complete.

This time we measured in AUTO mode (0.1%) at 70°C. The result was a humidity of 13.31%.

The result is 13.31% moisture content and 8 minutes 30 seconds measurement time. Of course, moisture content and measurement time may vary depending on the volume and condition of the sample, etc., so this is for reference only. Please take it as is.
