Material thickness measurement method and how to choose the right Olympus NDT thickness gauge

Ultrasonic thickness gauges provide NON-DESTRUCTIVE and NO-DAMAGE measurement solutions to the part being inspected.

Olympus NDT is a leading unit in thickness measuring equipment for high accuracy and meets the testing requirements of almost all types of materials.

They include a wide range of features from basic to advanced, with different activation codes it will become the most amazing and professional tool today.

Olympus NDT Thickness Gauge Nowadays, it can measure almost all types of materials such as metals, plastics, glass, synthetic materials, composites, rubber, castings, objects with high sound attenuation...

Similarities Between Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges and Flaw Detection Equipment

Ultrasonic thickness gauges and flaw detectors use the same basic principle. Both use a transducer that generates ultrasonic waves, and both measure the time it takes for the ultrasonic signal to leave the transducer, travel through the material, strike a reflecting surface, and return to the transducer.

All devices use the basic equation:

Distance = (Speed * Time)/2

The reflection and transmission of high-frequency sound waves – known as ultrasound – has long been an important tool for assessing weld integrity, as well as inspecting structural metals, pipes and tanks, boiler tubes, railroad tracks and axles, aerospace composites, and many other industrial applications.

Industrial ultrasonic testing equipment is popular because:

  • Cost effective, fast, reliable results
  • Usually does not require much sample surface preparation
  • No safety hazards or special licensing required for use

Ultrasonic thickness measurement of metals and other materials

The device uses ultrasonic method to determine the actual thickness of the test part with very high accuracy. They can meet many demanding applications in work, such as: Testing thickness from very thin to very thick, testing surfaces with extremely low to extremely high temperatures, measuring through the coating without removing them (can display both the thickness of the base metal and the coating), measuring through the outer Oxide/rust layer without removing them and using a couplant, measuring the Oxide/rust layer on the inner pipe wall without direct contact (can display both the thickness of the base metal and the Oxide/rust layer), measuring through multiple layers (displaying the thickness of each layer and the total of the layers), measuring materials with high sound attenuation such as castings, rubber, composites, synthetic fiberglass..., or plastic and glass materials.

Ultrasonic thickness gauge series

  • 27MG: compact, affordable design determines corrosion thickness (without coating)
  • OLYMPUS 45MG: corrosion thickness gauge with or without coating and accurate thickness measurement capability (with software option Single Element) Built-in optional alphanumeric data memory for reporting.
  • 38DL PLUS: The 38DL PLUS™ series is a proven, reliable instrument for all ultrasonic thickness testing applications. It can serve as a precision thickness gauge or corrosion gauge to meet the challenges of demanding industrial applications.
  • 72DL: High frequency precision thickness gauge. Compatible with single element transducers up to 125 MHz, ideal for measuring the thickness of ultra-thin materials, including multi-layer paints, coatings, can simultaneously display the independent thickness of 6 layers of material.

Features and applications of ultrasonic thickness gauge

Basic measurement modeTemperature compensation mode
The device can measure steel materials from very thin to very thick thickness with very high accuracy and resolution (supports up to 0.001 mm). The basic measuring range of the device can test steel materials from 0.5 mm up to 635 mm thick. The waveform display option helps to make more accurate judgments.Temperature changes in materials affect the velocity of sound waves and the accuracy of measurements. With temperature compensation, accurate results are obtained. The lowest temperature that can be tested is -20ºC, and the highest temperature that can be tested is up to 500ºC.
Overlay measurement modeMeasurement mode through the external oxide/scale layer
Some test parts have external coatings that cannot be removed during testing. The coating through measurement mode can display both the base metal and the coating thickness. After a period of use, pressure tanks and pipes often have oxide/rust layers on the outside. With the EMAT probe, it is possible to measure through the oxide/rust layer without having to remove it and use a coupling agent.
Internal Oxide/Scale Thickness Measurement ModeMulti-layer measurement mode
Measure the thickness of the Oxide/Rust layer appearing on the inner wall of tanks and pressure pipes. Olympus NDT equipment can measure and display both the base metal thickness and the Oxide/Rust layer. The device will calculate and display simultaneously the thickness of 04 separate layers and the total thickness of the selected layers. Often checks plastic layers in fuel tanks, bottle blanks and glass bonding together.
High resolution modeHigh penetration mode
In this mode, the device will use a high-frequency single element transducer to test thin thicknesses under 0.5 mm and provide a resolution of up to 0.001 mm. It can also measure other materials such as plastic and glass. In this mode, the device will use a low-frequency single element transducer to test materials with high sound attenuation. Allows measurement of: Composite, castings, rubber, cast iron, copper, synthetic fiberglass...

Product line MagnaMike 8600 Thickness measurement using Hall effect

The Magna-Mike 8600 is a simple magnetic method for reliable measurements on non-magnetic materials, and is very simple to operate. Measurements are made when the magnetic probe moves over the surface of the test piece and the ferromagnetic ball (or disc or wire) is placed on the opposite side of the test piece. With the Hall effect technique at the tip of the probe and the ferromagnetic ball (or disc or wire), the measurement results are displayed instantly on the Magna-Mike 8600's color LCD screen.

Magna-Mike 8600 This is a handheld device so it can be used in one place or moved to where needed. With a remote foot switch, the device can give us fast testing time and large volume.

Table for selecting the range of measured thicknesses and accuracy levels

The Magna Mike measuring range is from 0.001 mm (0.0001 in.) to 25.4mm (1 in.). Multiple target options extend measurement capabilities and accuracy.
