CHLORINE IN CLEAN WATER
Chlorine is the most commonly used water disinfectant in applications such as drinking water and wastewater treatment, swimming pool and spa sanitation and food processing and disinfection. Chlorine in water binds to bacteria, leaving only a portion of the original amount (free chlorine) to continue disinfecting. If the level of free chlorine is not in line with the pH, the water will have an unpleasant taste and odor due to the reduced disinfecting ability of chlorine.
Free chlorine (also known as residual chlorine) reacts with ammonium ions and organic compounds to form chlorine compounds; reducing the disinfecting ability compared to free chlorine. Compound chlorine along with chloramines form combined chlorine. Combining chlorine and free chlorine together forms total chlorine. While free chlorine has a much higher disinfecting ability, total chlorine is more stable and less volatile.
