TOTAL WATER HARDNESS
Water hardness, especially calcium, is an important parameter along with pH and alkalinity in testing the water quality of a swimming pool or hot tub. Water hardness includes both calcium and magnesium ions found in natural water and the concentrations will vary depending on the region and water source. Water sources include lakes, rivers, streams and groundwater (wells) with groundwater usually being the highest because the minerals are absorbed by rainwater as it percolates through the ground. For example, in areas with a lot of limestone, groundwater will be high in calcium carbonate. Hardness is an important measurement because high levels of calcium carbonate are likely to precipitate, especially as pH increases, resulting in cloudy water, clogged filters and ineffective heating. Low levels of hardness will cause calcification of pool water and concrete leading to rot and scaling.
