CHLORINE RESIDUAL IN CLEAN WATER
Disinfection is the process of killing disease-causing organisms (or pathogens). Chlorine (Cl2) is a common disinfectant, when mixed with pure water, it reacts to form hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hydrochloric acid (HCl). HOCl (free chlorine) is the most effective form of chlorine for disinfecting swimming pools, spas, and drinking water. Municipal water added element chlorine is added to the water supply as chlorine gas, liquid sodium hypochlorite, or dry calcium hypochlorite. In water, free chlorine ion molecules kill disease-causing pathogens, reduce odors, eliminate bacteria, and help remove unwanted elements. The U.S. EPA requires residual disinfectant to be present in drinking water to ensure that there is disinfectant available throughout the distribution system. However, the EPA has also established a maximum concentration of 4.0 mg/L for free chlorine as a health safety hazard.
