ALKALINE IN FISH TANK
Alkalinity is a system's ability to buffer its pH when acid is introduced. In saltwater systems, alkalinity is present in two main forms: carbonate (CO32-) and bicarbonate (HCO3–). It is important to test alkalinity in a reef aquarium because it is important for coral calcification and the skeletal formation of many marine organisms. The recommended range for alkalinity in a reef aquarium is 142-215ppm or 8-12 dKH.
There are many solutions and chemicals you can add to your reef tank to increase alkalinity, such as sodium bicarbonate, Kalkwasser (Kalk/limwater), or various commercial mixes. Too much alkalinity can be harmful to the organisms in your aquarium and can even cause alkalinity burn, coral bleaching, or tissue loss. Additionally, high alkalinity levels put your tank at risk for calcium carbonate precipitation (limestone formation). This precipitation can sometimes damage equipment and cause heaters or pumps to malfunction. When alkalinity drops too low, your tank is susceptible to adverse pH fluctuations, depriving alkalinity-dependent organisms of what they need.
Additionally, if using the water in an aquarium, it is recommended that phosphate levels be tested, as well silicate, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH and alkalinity.
