NITRITE IN SALTWATER AQUARIUMS
Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia (ammonium ion) to nitrite followed by the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate. The first step of this process takes place in an aquarium with nitrifying bacteria. As this process progresses, the amount of ammonium released increases as the nitrite level increases. Since nitrite is as harmful as ammonia, the nitrite level will remain at an infinite level. A complete biological filter will be able to keep the nitrite level low.
Additionally, if using the water in an aquarium, it is recommended that phosphate levels be tested, as well silicate, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite,pH and alkalinity.
