PHOSPHATES IN SALTWATER AQUARIUMS
While phosphate is essential for all life, it can be problematic for aquariums – especially corals, where excess phosphate can prevent coral calcification from occurring. The primary source of phosphate in a reef aquarium is food, so care must be taken to avoid excess phosphate when feeding. Adding tap water to an aquarium can also lead to increased phosphate levels. Many municipalities have water phosphate levels that are safe for humans, but can be detrimental to coral health.
Additionally, excessive algae growth, protein deficiency, poor water change schedules, and the use of tap water will contribute to high phosphate levels. Switching to reverse osmosis deionized (RO/DI) water as a source for both removal and saltwater can help reduce the total amount of phosphate in the aquarium environment. Using a refugium to grow beneficial macroalgae can also help export phosphate in a reef tank. Using filter media and chemicals, such as granular iron oxide (GFO) or carbon dosing, can help bind or utilize phosphate and remove it from the aquarium.
While high levels of phosphate in an aquarium can be harmful, a complete lack of phosphate is not ideal either. Phosphate is essential for tissue growth and a complete lack of phosphate in an aquarium can cause many problems. The ideal phosphate level should be greater than zero but less than 0.05ppm. Since many factors are attributed to high phosphate levels, aquariums should be tested for phosphate on a regular basis.
