The HI4004 is a liquid membrane half-cell ion selective electrode (ISE) for the determination of calcium (Ca2+) in solution. The PVC membrane comprising the organic ion exchanger produces a potential change due to the exchange of nitrate ions between the organic polymer membrane and the sample. The internal sensing elements are housed in a durable epoxy body.
HI4004 is ideal for use in the food, agriculture and water analysis industries.

The HI4004 calcium ion selective electrode is a half-cell sensor housed in an epoxy body. The internal elements are isolated from the sample by an organic polymer membrane. This liquid membrane sensor requires the HI5315 reference electrode to complete the measurement system.
Hanna solid state half-cell electrodes are designed for use with the HI5315 conical junction reference electrode. The conical reference forms a liquid junction with the sample solution at the tip of the conical junction, providing a very stable reference current and a consistent flow rate of electrolyte into the solution.
For the HI4004 to measure calcium accurately, it is important that the ionic strength of the standards and samples be adjusted to a high and constant value with Ionic strength adjustment solution (ISA). The ISA ensures that the activity coefficient is constant so that the concentration of free calcium ions can be measured. Measuring all solutions with a constant ionic strength reduces the margin of error between measurements. The HI4004 liquid nitrate ISE can measure from 3µM (0.12 mg/L) to 1M (40,080 mg/L).

Working principle: Liquid membrane ion selective electrodes generate voltage due to ion exchange occurring between the solution and a polymer membrane containing organic ion exchange resin. When the ionic strength of the solution is fixed by adding ISA, the voltage is proportional to the concentration of free ions in the solution.
