The FC300B is an ion selective electrode (ISE) used to determine the sodium ion (Na+) content in solution.
The glass membrane generates an electric current from the exchange of sodium ions between the membrane surface and the sample. The sensor is located inside the glass body.

The FC300B is a combination silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrode and a sodium ion selective electrode. Both are housed in a glass body filled with ammonium chloride/silver chloride solution.
The sodium sensitive membrane should be conditioned prior to calibration. Conditioning of the electrode is a two-step process in which the glass is etched and then rehydrated. The first step is etching. This process removes a thin layer of the sodium sensitive glass membrane, exposing a new sodium-containing surface. The second step is rehydration, in which the probe is placed in a storage solution to regenerate the glass membrane. Allowing the glass to regenerate after etching creates optimal conditions for sodium ion exchange between the membrane and the solution.
For the FC300B to measure sodium accurately, it is important that the ionic activity of the standards and samples be adjusted to a high and constant value with a sodium ion activity adjustment (ISA) solution. The sodium ISA is important for two reasons. One is that the ISA buffers the pH of the standards and samples above pH 9.8. This eliminates any interference from hydrogen ions at lower pHs. The second purpose of the ISA is to ensure that the activity coefficient is constant so that the concentration of free sodium ions can be measured. Solutions with a constant ionic strength reduce errors between different samples with different concentrations.
The FC300B sodium glass can measure from 10μM (0.23 mg/L) to 1 M (22,990 mg/L).
