The HI4010 fluoride selective electrode is a potentiometric half-cell housed in an epoxy body. The internal elements are isolated from the sample by a lanthanum fluoride crystal membrane. This solid-state sensor requires a separate reference electrode for measurement.
Hanna solid state half-cell electrodes are designed for use with the HI5315 conical junction reference electrode. The conical reference forms a liquid junction with the sample solution at the tip of the conical junction, providing a very stable reference current and a consistent flow rate of electrolyte into the solution.
For the HI4010 to accurately measure total fluoride, it is important that the pH and ionic strength of the standard and sample are adjusted to a constant value. The total ionic strength adjustment buffer (TISAB) ensures that the solution pH is between pH 5 and 8 and that the activity coefficient is constant. TISAB solutions also preferentially complex various metal ions, such as aluminum and iron, which tend to form compounds with fluoride ions. TISAB ensures that metal ions do not interfere, allowing for accurate fluoride measurements. Measuring solutions with a stable pH and ionic strength reduces measurement errors. The HI4010 Fluoride ISE can measure from 1μM (0.02 mg/L) to F– saturated

SALIENT FEATURES
Fixed sensor module – Solid-state half-cell ISE is the electrode detect free ions in solution. The Lanthanum Fluorine Crystal Sensor Membrane is attached to the halfcell electrode by a fixed sensor module for ease of use.
Durable epoxy body – Half-cell probe body made of durable epoxy resin.
BNC connection – The HI4010 has a universal BNC connector that easily connects to any meter with a BNC input.
Working principle: A solid-state sensor electrode develops a voltage due to the ion exchange that occurs between the solution and the inorganic membrane. An equilibrium occurs due to the limited solubility of the membrane material in the sample. When the ionic strength of the solution is fixed by the addition of an ionic strength regulator, the voltage will be proportional to the concentration of free ions in the solution.
