Force and mechanical measuring equipment
The HI1131P is a glass body, refillable, double junction pH electrode with a BNC connector and battery. The battery port is used to enable the CAL Check feature of the HI2221, HI2222, and HI2223 benchtop meters.
This electrode has a single ceramic junction in the outer reference cell and a spherical pH sensing part made of high temperature glass. The design is ideal for measuring laboratory samples, liquid samples and high temperature samples, as well as general purpose use.

High temperature glass
Hanna Instruments offers a line of pH electrodes designed for a variety of applications. The type of glass used for the pH sensor, bulb shape, body material, type of junction, type of reference, and electrolyte used are among the design considerations.
The HI1131P uses high temperature (HT) glass, spherical bulb, glass body, single ceramic frit, double junction and is refillable with 3.5M KCl.
High Temperature Glass Formula
Measuring pH at very high temperatures is not beneficial to the sensitive glass bulb and will shorten its life. A pH electrode with plain glass (GP) will have an impedance of 100 megaohms at a temperature of 25oC while the impedance of HT glass is about 400 megaohms at a temperature of 25oC. When HI1131P used at high temperatures the impedance drops to that of GP glass. HI1131P Suitable for use with samples measuring from 0 to 100oC.
Spherical glass head
Spherical bulbs for general purpose use. Other tip shapes include cone for penetration and flat tip for surface measurements.
Glass body
The glass body is ideal for laboratory use. The glass is resistant to many harsh chemicals and can be easily cleaned. The glass body also allows for rapid heat transfer to the internal reference electrolyte. The mV generated by the reference cell is temperature dependent. The reference potential is stabilized more quickly than equilibrium.
Single ceramic double reference junction
The HI1131P has a double junction design. pH electrodes are available as single junction or double junction. See below for a full description of the differences. The junction, also known as a salt bridge, is a necessary component of the electrical circuit. The movement of ions must flow through the junction for a stable reading. The outer reference has a single ceramic frit. The ceramic is a porous material that is easily fused to the glass body and has a similar expansion coefficient. A single ceramic junction has a flow rate of 15-20 µl/hour. Other junction types are available with higher flow rates and made from different materials.
Recharge electrolysis
HI1131P is a refillable probe. Since it is a double junction pH electrode, the fill solution is the HI7082 3.5M KCl. This solution does not contain silver as with the single junction electrode. The absence of silver prevents silver precipitate from forming at the contact surface and clogging. Clogging of the junction will result in drifty and erratic readings.
BNC + battery connection
The HI1131P uses a BNC and pin connector. The BNC is a universal connector that can be used on any pH meter that has a female BNC input. The pin port is used to enable the CAL Check feature of the HI122, HI123, HI221, HI222, HI223, HI2221, HI2222, and HI2223 benchtop pH meters.
