HIGH TEMPERATURE GLASS (HT) FORMULA
Measuring pH at very high temperatures is not beneficial to the sensitive glass bulb and will shorten its life. A pH electrode with plain glass (GP) will have an impedance of 100 megaohms at a temperature of 25oC while the impedance of HT glass is about 400 megaohms at a temperature of 25oC. When the 1043B is used at elevated temperatures the resistance drops to that of GP glass. The HI1043B is suitable for use with samples that measure from 0 to 100oC.
Spherical Electrode Head
The pH electrode tip is made of common glass, the glass is easy to clean by stirring and rinsing with specialized electrode cleaning solution immediately after measurement.
ELECTRODE BODY MADE OF GLASS
The glass body is ideal for laboratory use. The glass is resistant to many harsh chemicals and can be easily cleaned. The glass body also allows for rapid heat transfer to the internal reference electrolyte. The mV generated by the reference cell is temperature dependent. The reference potential is stabilized more quickly than equilibrium.
ADVANCED DOUBLE JOINT
The HI1043B has a double junction design. pH electrodes are available as single junction or double junction. See below for a full description of the differences. The junction, also known as a salt bridge, is a necessary component of the electrical circuit. The movement of ions must flow through the junction for a stable reading. The outer reference has a single ceramic frit. The ceramic is a porous material that is easily fused to the glass body and has a similar expansion coefficient. A single ceramic junction has a flow rate of 15-20 µl/hour. Other junction types are available with higher flow rates and made from different materials.
RE-FILLING THE ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION
The HI1043B is a refillable electrode. Since it is a double junction pH electrode, the fill solution is the HI7082 3.5M KCl. This solution does not contain silver as with single junction electrodes. The absence of silver prevents silver precipitates from forming at the junction and clogging. Clogging of the junction will result in drifty and erratic readings.
BNC CONNECTOR
The HI1043B uses a BNC connector. This type of connector is universal and can be used on any pH meter that has a female BNC input.
