The HI7051L Soil Sample Preparation Solution is an electrolyte solution used to measure soil pH. Soil pH is typically measured using a water or electrolyte slurry, where a set ratio of soil:solvent (solvent being water or electrolyte solution) is selected; Common ratios used for soil pH are 1:1, 1:2 or 1:5, where more solvent than soil is used when analyzing soils containing high organic matter or clay. This electrolyte solution is recommended as it is less affected by the electrolyte concentration in the soil and gives a more consistent reading for soils with fluctuating salt content due to weather conditions or crop residue. Using the HI7051 solution prior to taking a measurement provides a more accurate pH reading for soil samples.

Specifications |
– 500mL plastic bottle with blue label – Colorless solution |
Using |
– Allow the substrate to dry and remove any rough plant matter and pebbles. – Prepare a solution of 1 part loose soil and 2 parts HI7051 solution (e.g., place up to 50 mL of soil in a beaker, compact slightly, then pour this soil into another container and add 100 mL of HI7051 solution). – Mix well for 30 seconds and then wait for 5 minutes for the nutrients to dissolve into the solution. Mix again and immerse the pH electrode into the prepared sample and swirl gently to ensure maximum electrode surface contact. |
Methods of preservation |
– After use, cover and store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight – Do not dilute or add any chemicals to the solution. – Always use fresh solution for each calibration – ABSOLUTELY do not pour used solution back into the bottle. |
