Force and mechanical measuring equipment
HI96803 is a portable food refractometer that measures the sugar content of aqueous solutions as % glucose by mass (%w/w). The HI96803 provides results with an accuracy of ±0.2%. Operation is simplified with only two buttons: one for calibration with distilled or deionized water and one for measurement. All readings are automatically compensated for temperature variations per the ICUMSA Methods Book and displayed within a 1.5 second response time. The sealed flint glass prism and stainless steel construction are easy to clean. Simply wipe with a soft cloth in preparation for the next sample.

Fast response time of 1.5 seconds for temperature compensated values
The HI96803 is a portable refractometer that converts the refractive index of a food sample to % glucose by mass. This conversion is based on the ICUMSA Methods Book (International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis) for changes in refractive index with temperature in percent by weight glucose solutions. The HI96803 is ideal for the analysis of fruits, energy drinks, puddings, soy milk, juices, jams, marmalades, honey, jellies, soups, tofu and condiments. The HI96803 is easy to use for measuring sugar in food samples or in the laboratory.
To make a standard % glucose solution:
To make a glucose solution, follow the steps below:
Note: The solution above 20% needs to be stirred or shaken vigorously and the water heated to about 40oC. Remove the solution from the tank when the glucose has completely dissolved and allow to cool before use.

Refractive Index
The HI96803 allows for measurements based on a sample’s refractive index. Refractive index is a measure of how light behaves as it passes through a sample. Depending on the composition of the sample, light will refract and reflect differently. By measuring this with a linear image sensor, the sample’s refractive index can be assessed and used to determine its physical properties such as concentration and density. In addition to the linear image sensor, the HI96803 uses an LED light, prism, and lens to make measurement possible.
Temperature variations will affect the accuracy of refractometry results, so temperature compensation is necessary to produce reliable results. The HI96803 incorporates a built-in temperature sensor and is programmed with industry-standard algorithms that then apply temperature compensation to measurements according to ICUMSA standards for a percent by weight glucose solution.
