Force and mechanical measuring equipment
The HI847492 is a highly accurate portable turbidity meter for beer analysis that builds on HANNA's years of experience. The HI847492 complies with ASBC (American Society of Beverage Chemists) and uses a Nephelometer to test for turbidity. The meter is specifically designed for quality beer measurements, providing accurate and precise readings every time.
Average and continuous measurement modes
Fast Tracker™ – Tag Identification System (TIS)
The HI847492 Turbidity Meter is specifically designed for measuring turbidity in beer quality analysis. It is based on an advanced optical system that ensures accurate and long-term stable results, and minimizes stray light and color interference. Regular calibration with the supplied standards compensates for variations in lamp intensity. The 25 mm round cuvettes made of special optical glass ensure repeatability of turbidity measurements.
Outstanding Features
ASBC Compliance – The HI847492 meets the requirements of the ASBC method for measuring the turbidity of beer. Measurements are taken from chilled and degassed beer samples, and results are reported in FTU units.
Calibration – Two, three, four point turbidity calibration using supplied standards (<0.1, 15, 100, 800 NTU) or user standards.
AMCO AEPA-1 Turbidity Standard Solution – AMCO AEPA-1 standard is recognized by USEPA. The non-toxic standard is made of styrene divinylbenzene polymer that is uniform in size and density. The standard solution is reusable and stable with a long shelf life.
Fast Tracker™ – For advanced applications, the HI83749 is equipped with Fast Tracker™ – Tag Identification System (TIS) to make data collection and management simpler than ever. Fast Tracker™ allows users to record the time and location of specific measurements or series of measurements using iButton® tags near sampling points for quick and easy results. Each iButton® tag contains a computer chip with a unique identification code encased in stainless steel.
GLP Data – The HI847492 features complete GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) functionality allowing traceability of calibration conditions. Data includes calibration points, date, and time.
Record data – Up to 200 measurements can be stored in internal memory and reviewed at any time.
Data transmission – For further storage or analysis, recorded data can be downloaded to a Windows PC using the USB or RS232 port and HI 92000 software
LCD backlight display – An easy-to-understand, user-friendly backlit LCD display. Displayed codes guide the user step-by-step through routine operations and calibration.
IMPORTANCE
Beer clarity is a parameter that is constantly monitored in the brewery. Clarity can be affected by haze, or by insoluble or semi-soluble suspended particles small enough to form a colloidal suspension in the beer, typically less than 2 mm. The particles scatter transmitted light and reduce the brightness of the beer. To ensure consistent product quality, brewers need more accurate measuring instruments than visual inspection.
Several substances can cause haze in beer, but the most common problem is cross-linking of polyphenols and proteins. These materials exist in equilibrium in beer and combine to form insoluble colloids. Several stabilisation treatments are available to improve clarity, and the products must be controlled at several steps in the brewing process, particularly after filtration and before bottling.
The HI847492 Turbidity Meter reads results in FTU (Formazin Turbidity Units). FTU is equivalent to NTU (Nephelometeric Turbidity Units). A conversion table between measurement units is shown below:

Operating principle
The HI847492 is designed to comply with ASBC standards for turbidity in beer, compensating for beer color to ensure accuracy. The light beam that passes through the sample is scattered in all directions. The intensity and direction of the scattered light is affected by many factors, such as the wavelength of the incident light, particle size and shape, refractive index, and color. The optical system includes a 580 nm LED, a scattered light detector (90°), and a transmitted light detector (180°).
The instrument also incorporates a continuous measurement mode for measuring suspended matter content, and an averaging mode that accumulates multiple values, giving a final average value. For beer analysis, the averaging mode is particularly useful for measuring samples with suspended particles of varying sizes.
The HI847492 is built with a powerful microprocessor that automatically calculates the FTU value from the signals received by the two light receivers, and the algorithm automatically compensates for any color effects that may affect the measurement results. In addition, the optical system and measurement method have been improved to compensate for fluctuations in light intensity, reducing the need for frequent recalibration.
TURBIDITY STANDARD SOLUTION
The AMCO AEPA-1 HI83749-11 standards ensure measurements are traceable to a standard reference material. These standards are used to calibrate and verify turbidimeters.
