FLORIDE IN CLEAN WATER

Fluoride is one of the very few chemicals that has been shown to have a significant effect on humans through drinking water. Fluoride has beneficial effects on teeth at low concentrations in drinking water, but exposure to fluoride in drinking water alone, or in combination with exposure to fluoride from other sources, can cause a number of adverse effects. Water fluoridation is the addition of fluoride to public water supplies to reduce dental caries. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, too little may be ineffective, too much may cause tooth discoloration. The 1994 World Health Organization Expert Committee recommended fluoride levels of 0.5 to 1.0 mg/L, depending on climate. Bottled water and some home water filters typically remove some or all fluoride.
