ALKALINE IN SWIMMING POOL
Alkalinity is a very important parameter in monitoring pool water chemistry. Alkalinity is the buffering capacity of a solution to resist changes in pH when an acid or base is added. This can be a challenge when using common forms of chlorine, where, and is the basis for the increase in pH when fluoride is added. When the pH of the water is above 7.4, chlorine becomes primarily hypochlorite rather than hypochlorous acid when the pH is below 7.4. Hypochlorous acid is 100 times more effective at disinfecting than hypochlorite. When the water is low in alkalinity, the pH will increase when chlorine is added. When there is sufficient alkalinity, when chlorine is added, the base is absorbed and the pH remains the same. Monitoring alkalinity is important in maintaining a stable pH in a hot tub or spa.
The HI7024 Pool Line Checker portable colorimeter is designed for measuring copper in swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas. The pocket-sized design of the Checker fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and the large LCD display is easy to read. The auto-off feature ensures that battery life will not be depleted if you forget to turn the meter off.
To perform the test, place a sample of water into a cuvette and zero the meter. Next, a reagent packet is added which reacts with the alkalinity in the water sample to produce a distinctive color range from yellow to blue-green. Finally, place the cuvette in the Checker, press the button and read the result. It’s that easy. It is important to note that if chlorine is present in the water sample to be tested, the HI937554-53 dechlorinator must be added before testing.
