IRON IN SWIMMING POOL WATER
Many water sources may contain iron. The exact concentration will depend on the geographical area and whether the water is from a lake, river or groundwater. Groundwater will often have the highest concentration because minerals are picked up as rain percolates through the soil to the aquifers below. Iron in pools, spas and hot tubs has many different problems. One problem is staining. Iron will be introduced in a reduced state and when exposed to air or other oxidizing agents, such as in the presence of chlorine or bromine, the iron will oxidize causing rust stains. The reaction of iron with oxidants will increase the need for oxidants needed to maintain consistent levels of disinfection. A high need for chorine may indicate an iron problem, in which the water must be pre-treated before being added to a water body or treated by filtering it out.
