From drinking water and wastewater treatment to pool and spa sanitization, monitoring chlorine levels has a significant impact on public health as well as ROI and efficiency for heating systems and industrial applications. As one of the oldest and most common forms of disinfection, chlorine improves water quality by destroying pathogenic microorganisms and reacting with other organic and inorganic matter. Chlorine levels must be actively monitored to ensure that sufficient chlorine is available for disinfection, as well as to control adverse effects such as taste, odor, and potential reactions with organic matter to form harmful disinfection byproducts. Chlorine is a powerful oxidizer, destroying most organic and bacterial contaminants and can combine with nitrogen-containing compounds to form chloramines. When chlorine is dosed for disinfection, only a portion of the dosed chlorine remains active to actually continue the disinfection process.
CHLORINE MEASUREMENT BY DPD COLORIMATIC METHOD
The PCA analyzer uses the DPD colorimetric method in which the indicator N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine and a buffer solution are mixed with the sample. The resulting chemical reaction produces a bright red color in the presence of chlorine. The intensity of the color is proportional to the concentration. The color intensity is measured photometrically (a light source at a specific wavelength and a photodetector) and converted to a chlorine concentration, in mg/L, which is displayed on the front panel. The sampling interval for chlorine measurement is adjustable from 3 to 90 minutes. The PCA has a dosing relay to add chlorine using a dosing pump or chlorine generator when the reading falls below a programmable set point. The technology used by the PCA to measure chlorine is the same as that found in portable and benchtop colorimeters, providing consistent results when performing process verification with either type of meter.
To measure total chlorine (free chlorine and combined chlorine), potassium iodide is added. A pH of 5.1 is required for this reaction. Thus, total chlorine measurement requires another buffer solution containing potassium iodide. Once the reactions are complete, the optical signal at 555 nm is compared with the signal obtained after passing the sample before the reagent was added. Finally, the chlorine concentration is calculated and displayed on the screen.
Indicator and buffer reagents are supplied with the meter. With a 5 minute sampling time, reagents only need to be replenished about once a month.
The PCA 320 uses the HI1005 pH probe to continuously measure pH in the sample stream over a range of 0 to 14 pH. Sample temperature is measured over a range of 5 to 75°C. pH and temperature are displayed on the front panel, and the pH value is temperature compensated.
OUTSTANDING FEATURES
ALARM AND WARNING SYSTEM
Through this system, the user can enable or disable low and high alarms for all parameters. The system also provides over-dose protection and alerts when the system is not working properly. The system will stop the process until the error is corrected by the user. The time is displayed on the main control panel and the reminder times are for “old standard”, “expired reagent”, and “expired SIM”. All these alerts are generated based on user settings.
Measurement and control cycle
The PCA310 has a control time cycle that can be set by the user according to the size of the control system. Control, pumping and alarm processes can be performed based on this time cycle. The cycle can be set from 3 to 90 minutes.
Chlorine Control
Four user-adjustable chlorine level setpoints: one proportional dosing setpoint, two alarm setpoints and minimum pump level. The proportional dosing factor (1/Δ) is optional with Δ between 0.1 and 2 pH. The chlorine dosing system controls an SPST relay. Each alarm can be enabled or disabled.
Analog output
Two 4-20 mA or 0-20 mA outputs are available for connection to external devices such as chart recorders. The user can connect two dosing pumps via the 4-20 mA outputs for chlorine and acid/base dosing. The analog output is fully programmable and compatible with chlorine concentration. The analog output limits are selectable.
Record data
Up to 3500 values can be stored (at least 7 days of recording at 3 minute intervals), which can be reviewed or downloaded. The recorded data records include the time, full information about the parameter values and the alarm status at that time.
Installation
Easy control with wall mount kit and supplied with chemicals.
