Mitutoyo Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation specializing in measuring instruments and metrological technology, headquartered in Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki, Kanagawa.
Mitutoyo, founded on October 22, 1934, was founded by Yehan Numata (沼田恵範 Numata Ehan) with one product, micrometers. Mitutoyo's philosophy at the time was to produce high-quality micrometers, but also to produce them in sufficient quantities to make them affordable and available to all. This philosophy was expanded over the next few decades to include a wider product range focusing on mechanical products, dimensional measurements, such as calipers, ring indicators, and other measuring instruments.
As electronic technology became more widely available in the 1970s, Mitutoyo digitized its dimensional measuring instruments to include electronic or digital measuring instruments. During this time the company also began to offer larger, more complex, and more sensitive measuring instruments, including optical comparators, mold measuring instruments, and coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). When statistical process control (SPC) was introduced, Mitutoyo led the world in developing output gages, interfaces, data collectors, and analysis software to take advantage of this new science of measurement.
As computers entered the field of metrology, Mitutoyo once again shifted its focus to incorporate this technology into its products and push measurement accuracy into the sub-micrometer range. Today, Mitutoyo presents more than 6,000 of its products as integrated, computer-based measurement systems that can be interconnected to create closed-loop measurement networks.
