The USB‑232 interface transforms your USB port into a single asynchronous serial port for communication with RS232 devices. You can use a USB‑232 port as a standard serial port from your application, including RTS/CTS hardware handshake lines. NI serial interfaces also appear as standard COM ports for compatibility with programs that use serial communications.

National Instruments USB-232 Serial Interface Device

The USB-232 (Part Number: 778472-01) is a 1-Port device created by National Instruments. This device transforms the user's Universal Serial Bus (USB) port into an Asynchronous Serial Port. The purpose of this transformation is to enable communication with Serial Devices. This useful product is available in 3 different versions. The available versions include 1, 2, and 4-port versions. The USB-232 NI uses standard RS-232 communications. This product of National Instruments is compatible with Windows 2000. It is also compatible with Windows XP. This simple hardware is compatible with standard personal computer (PC) serial ports.

The USB 232 National Instruments Serial Interface Device has an ambient storage temperature of -40 to 80 degrees Celsius. The typical power requirement of this device is 80 mA at +5 VDC. However, the maximum power requirement of this instrument is 200 mA at +5 VDC. The case material of this device is PVC.
