OVERVIEW AND HOW TO USE THE ROPE TENSION METER

SEMIKI analyzes the principle of belt/belt/belt tension testing and how to choose the right tension measuring device

V-belt tension adjustment instructions & methods

* Belt tension is measured by pulling the belt distance while holding the sensor close.

The belt tension is adjusted until the belt beat frequency or measured tension is within the manufacturer's recommendations. Incorrect belt tension, as well as misalignment of the pulleys, adversely affects the reliability and efficiency of the belt drive. Once the pulleys have been aligned, it is important to tension the belt according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Tension parameter table here

The number one cause of drive belt failure is improper belt tensioning. To ensure long and efficient belt operation, you must learn how to tension your V-Belt regularly.

If the belt is too loose, it can slip, causing the belt to wear out quickly and ultimately losing both power and productivity.

Conversely, if the belt is over-tensioned, the excessive stress on the belt, bearings, and shafts can cause these parts to wear prematurely.

The correct belt tension is the lowest tension at which the belt does not slip or squeal under peak load. However, there is a wide range of tensions between these two extremes at which the drive will operate effectively. The main goal of learning how to tension a V-belt is to find this appropriate tensioning medium.

Important Note: Never use tape as this will damage the belt and cause premature failure. Always keep the drive free of foreign material that could cause slippage or damage to the belt and pulley surfaces.

How to check belt tension

* Mechanical method: Alignment, periodic tension check

This method of measuring V-Belt tension is based on a pencil gauge and mathematical standards according to the manufacturer's conventional force table.

⇒ We can use measuring devices V-BELT PENCIL TYPE TENSION ADJUSTMENT DEVICE

⇒ We can use  DENSHO BTG-2 belt tension measuring device 150N -1000N (15kgf-100kg)

* Digital method: belt tension measurement with belt frequency meter

This method is the SEMIKI recommended option for measuring belt tension accurately and saving time.
Digital accuracy in measurement, will help you achieve the best belt life, ultimately saving you money.

B1) Enter the belt mass and span parameter data into the meter. The parameters can be obtained from any available belt manufacturer.

B2) Aim the sensor as close to the centre of the selected belt span as possible to obtain the most accurate tension reading. It is best to orient the sensor so that the long edge is parallel to the belt centreline by approximately 0.5mm. Using a span that is too short can give an erroneous tension reading, which can be much higher than the actual belt tension due to the influence of belt stiffness. If the top surface of the belt is not easily accessible, projecting the sensor onto the edge of the belt will also work.

B3) Touch the belt using the handle of a small tool or something similar to make it vibrate when reading the result.

→ The gauge will report the belt tension in force units.

CONCLUDE

These are just two methods used in industry to measure belt tension (V-Belt) to help evaluate, align and maintain the quality of the belt for long-term use, accurately and effectively.

Other techniques exist but are beyond the scope of this article. The techniques presented here are guidelines and the benefits/disadvantages of each technique are discussed.

With many years of experience in the field of belt tension measurement and testing, Semiki engineers are trained, installed, operated and instructed customers on how to operate, test and apply the most suitable belt tension measuring equipment.
